Survivor Stories: "Thoughts From My Desk, 5"

THOUGHTS FROM MY DESK

Charlotte

Human nature and human life: the Earth's most powerful presence and most precious gift.

It is truly remarkable to reflect upon the journey of the human race. No matter what your beliefs are on evolution, religion, or the beginning of human life, no one can dispute the journey humans have made as a whole. No one knows for sure where we initially came from, but it sure is powerful what we have done since. All the technology, medical developments, linguistics, and more are a result of a group of people laser-focused on development. Has the human race made mistakes? Yes...a LOT of them. However, it is important to acknowledge that so much good would not be here today without brilliant human minds.

In accordance with this, it is amazing to reflect on individualized humanity. There are over seven billion people on this planet... and every single one is different. Every single human has a different experiences, tastes, stories, and more. When you take a second to think about it, it really does emphasize the humanity of each individual person. We are all human souls.

This inherent humanity in each one of us is a great gift, but it is often forgotten.

I hate that I am no longer surprised when I hear about a school shooting. Gun violence has become so prevalent that it is easy to reduce instances such as school shootings to mere statistics. When looking at issues of gun violence, I beg each and every one of you to remember the humanity in every person. Every person that loses their life had a story to tell. They had a favorite color, song, movie. They were once a child. They may have BEEN a child.

As gun violence becomes increasingly prominent worldwide, we must fight to change the narrative. We must fight to help people remember the inherent humanity and human life inside of every single one of us. I beg everyone who reads this post to humanize the victims of gun violence. Remember their names. Remember their stories. Remember all they had left to accomplish.

When we start to truly acknowledge individualized humanity, it motivates us to make change. Humanity is Earth's greatest presence. What we do with this power is up to the jurisdiction of the people. So, I must ask - what will you do to fight for others?
