THOUGHTS FROM MY DESK

Charlotte

Music and justice.

Two concepts that may seem to have little in common. Two concepts that, regardless of this fact, change our world every single day. Our society is wholly shaped by two fundamental concepts: the culture in which we live, and the way we govern this culture. Music is one of the most contributing factors to media and culture. Justice is one of the governing principles that helps lead our society.

Henceforth, I must beg the question: do music and justice have as little in common as we initially believe?

You may be wondering, "Charlotte, where could you possibly be going with this?" Contrary to my somewhat chaotic connection, I promise that I actually do have a point. Simply put: in order to achieve justice, govern our society fairly, and fight for those who face injustice, we must utilize all sectors of our society.

Musicians have used their music to communicate important political, social, and economic messages for centuries. By using a somewhat casual form of media to speak on serious topics, musicians are able to garner a much larger audience. I believe governing politicians and those who speak out against injustice have much to learn from this form of communication.

In order to fight the good fight and successfully eliminate gun violence in this country, I believe we must view music as our wholly untapped resource. By utilizing a beloved form of arts to advocate for the ever-important message of preventing gun violence, I believe those who turn a blind eye to injustice will finally open their eyes (and their ears).

As a diehard music lover, as well as an advocate for preventing gun violence, I hope to connect the two things I care for in the name of justice. Therefore, my next post will include a collection of songs that I believe speak to a greater message. If any readers resonate with this connection, I urge you to reach out with any suggestions to add to the list.

Although it's easy to lose hope in the face of injustice, taking a creative approach to advocacy is a leap in the ever-progressing journey of liberation for all victims of gun violence.
